Exploring Hodgepodge Hardware-Part 4

This project was inspired by "The Bad News Bears" and will be one of the designs you can learn to make at my Sweet Treat Cards Class on April 10th.

The Styled Silver Raised Dots Oval Frame (#111325) works perfectly with the Small Oval Punch (#107304).  I always stamp first and punch after to make sure the image is lined up the way I want it.  Attach the image to the frame with Mini Glue Dots (#103683) rolled up like taquitos.  Or you can glue it with Crystal Effects (#101055) or Tombow Multipurpose Adhesive (#110755).  And there's always the trace & cut method I use most often, as I described here.

Directions:

1. Lightly brayer 2-1/4" x 3-1/2" piece of Glossy White with Almost Amethyst.  Punch short sides with Scallop Trim Border.  Stamp flower image twice with Jet Black StazOn.  Let dry.
2. Sponge 2-1/2" x 5-1/2" Glossy White with Gable Green and Glorious Green.  Punch one long side with Scallop Trim Border.
3. Run 6" x 12" Kraft through BigShot with Texturz Plate.  Trim to 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" and fold.
4. Cut Scallop Square from 5-1/2" x5-1/2" Apricot Appeal.  Cut in half.  Stamp upper left corner with greeting in StazOn.
5. Color flower images with markers.  Let dry.
6. Adhere sponged glossy piece to 1/4" from edge of Kraft card with SNAIL.  Wrap ribbon at punched edge and secure with SNAIL, leaving small overlap.
7. Adhere half Scallop Square to card front with SNAIL, overlapping sponged piece.
8. Adhere flower image piece to lower front with Mini Glue Dots.

Easy Texture in an Easter Card

Directions:

1. Fold 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" Bashful Blue card stock in half and crease well.
2. Run 5-1/2" x 6" piece of Gable Green through textured embossing folder.  Trim to 4" x 5-1/4".
3. Punch one long edge of 6" x 1-1/2" Whisper White card stock with Scallop Edge punch.  Ink border stamp with Garden Green (keep rubber face up) and line up punched edge of card stock with scallops.  Smooth card stock with hand to transfer ink.  Trim close to ink edges, then trim to fit textured background width.  Punch row of rectangles with Double Rectangle Punch.
4. Stamp oval image on Whisper White scrap (2" x 6")with Apricot Appeal, Pretty in Pink and Lavender Lace, cleaning between each stamping.  Cut out.
5. Stamp tag image in Regal Rose on remaining Whisper White.  Punch out with Small Tag Punch and line edges with Bashful Blue Marker.
6. Punch larger tag from scrap of Apricot Appeal (approx. 3" x 1-1/2" or larger).  Layer stamped tag on top with SNAIL.
7. Weave ribbon through holes on green scalloped border, wrapping around textured card stock layer.  Tie knot and secure with Stampin' Dimensionals.
8. Tuck oval "eggs" behind green border with Mini Glue Dots.
9. Place tag at top of textured layer, about 1/2" down and 1/2" in from edges.  Pierce hole through all layers and secure with Rhinestone Brad.  Flatten prongs on back.
10. Adhere completed layer to card front with Stampin' Dimensionals.

I think I'll add this to my "Spring Fever" collection.  Yesterday's card  also featured similar colors and BigShot dies.  You'll get the details on that one tomorrow.

By the way, Eggcoutrements also comes in wood-mount (#115164), if you prefer.  In that case, you don't need the blocks.  I'd almost recommend that because the Clear-Mount blocks are tricky to work with the border image, whereas the wood-mount block would be more stable to stamp the long image.  I got around the trickiness by stamping upside down.

Hybrid Scrapbooking - Finished Page

This is the completed page I started last week.  It didn't take me more than 20 minutes, start to finish, including printing out the digital page.

I used the D is for Dog stamp set (#115784) with a Ballet Blue Classic Stampin' Pad (#100907) and tied a bow from Bashful Blue Taffeta Ribbon (#109066).  The outer page is an 8-1/2" square of Melon Mambo Textured Card Stock (part of In Color Textured 12 x 12 Card Stock Assortment #115538) with a scrap behind the "D is for Dog" image stamped on a scrap of Whisper White Card Stock (#100730).  For journaling, I used the Basic Black Stampin' Write Journaler (#105394).

Directions:

1. Fold 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" Sahara Sand in half and crease well with Bone Folder.  Punch through both thicknesses of card stock with Corner Rounder Punch in all 4 corners.
2. Punch all 4 corners of 4" x 5-1/4" Taken with Teal and 3-3/4" x 5" Sweet Pea paper.
3. Adhere paper to teal layer with SNAIL.
4. Stamp "Many Thanks" image in Chocolate Chip on scrap of So Saffron.  Align image in frame and trace around frame with pencil.  Mark holes in sides and punch centers with 1/16" punch.  Cut out inside the lines so the frame covers the card stock.
5. Wrap 12" ribbon around layers.  Tie knot and move into place.
6. Align frame on ribbon and pierce holes one at a time.  Push brad through frame, image, ribbon and both layers, then spread prongs on back.  Repeat with other hole.  Flatten prongs with side of punch or hammer.
7. Attach completed layer to front of card with Stampin' Dimensionals.

Exploring Hodgepodge Hardware-Part 3

The project for the day highlights the square frame from the Styled Silver Hodgepodge Hardware (#111325) kit.  I wanted a very tailored card to go with the frame and emphasize the "Many Thanks" image from the Four Square stamp set (#111632).

       

The frame opening is just under 1" square.  I use the frame to see what images will fit in the opening by placing it over the stamp set images in the catalogs.  Almost all the images are actual size, so that saves you from bringing out all your stamp sets and trying them.

The frame is a good size to highlight a photo, too.  Imagine a page with a group picture surrounded by these little frames with individual portraits of people in the group.  I'll have to do one and show you (since I just thought of this right now!).

I like to stamp my image and line up the frame around it, then trace around the frame and cut it out.  This saves having to glue because the brads hold the image piece in place.  I always put dots in the center when I mark the holes so I can punch through the card stock for the brads.

Why is the Sun so Bright Today?

For those of us in the US, it's Daylight Saving Time.  If you're subject to it, time to move your clocks ahead one hour. including the TV recorders and DVD/Blu-Ray players that are older or not connected to the internet.

What does this mean to rubber stamp and scrapbooking artists>?  You have an extra hour of daylight that you're actually awake for!  More time for photo-taking with more natural light opportunities, more daylight design time, and, for me, 3am inspiration comes earlier.

Need the exact time?  Use the US Naval Observatory's clock - it's the national standard.  Since it gives the time in the Universal Time Code, you can use it for your clocks outside the US, too.

Paper & Your Flower Folds Die

I've been working with the Stampin' Up! Flower Folds Bigz XL Die (#115970) for the BigShot Die-Cut Machine (#113439).  I've come up with a sort-of paper saving technique that will save you from having to run your paper through twice to get all four flower die-cuts.

The big flowers fit in a 5-1/2" x 8-3/4" area and the small flowers fit in a 5-1/2" x 5-1/2" square.  To run them through the BigShot once, there will be overlap.  This will leave a mark, which you can minimize by going over it with the flat of a Bone Folder (#102300).  I use the rounded end.  The mark will hardly show on printed paper, so you won't really need to treat it.

If you want to avoid overlap, you will need to trim both pieces on a slant.  I made a template from a sheet of Grid Paper (#102787), which is about 11" x 17" in size.  This makes it long enough.  I folded it in two and ran it through the BigShot, then marked the slant with a ruler.  You then lay out each sheet of paper one at a time and mark where the slant goes.  You will need longer pieces to allow for the slant so both parts fit together.

Hybrid Scrapbooking - First Step

I took some pictures of my youngest granddaughter, who loves to pose, and decided to put them all on one page.  With the hybrid method, it's easy to digitally arrange and mat your photos, and add a title in any style you want, especially with Stampin' Up!'s My Digital Studio (#118108).  You can also add journaling blocks, but I wanted to put those on after I added physical embellishments.

Directions:

1. Fold & crease 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" Only Orange card stock. Make sure the crease is sharp, then punch through both thicknesses in all corners with the Ticket Corner Punch.
2. Punch all 4 corners of 4" x 5-1/4" Handsome Hunter card stock and 3-3/4" x 5" Apricot Appeal card stock.
3. Stamp "Go Green" image in lower right corner of Apricot Appeal, about 1/2" from side and bottom edges.
4. Center Apricot Appeal layer on Handsome Hunter layer and adhere with SNAIL.
5. Pierce center of "O" in "Go Green" iamge and push brad through.  Spread prongs and flatten.
6. Punch 4 large hearts from scrap (2" x 3" minimum so you have enough room to hold it) of Handsome Hunter. Also punch out branch from 2-Step Bird punch. Use small heart for shamrock holder and attach Mini Glue Dot.  Attach 4 large hearts with points meeting in the center.  Attach branch to back of shamrock with Mini Glue Dot.
7. Place shamrock on card front and secure with Mini Glue Dots.  Pierce center and push brad through.  Spread prongs and flatten.
8. Wrap Mellow Moss ribbon around card front and tie knot.  Pierce center of knot through both layers of the card front.  Push brad through, spread prongs and flatten.  Trim ribbon ends.
9. Attach layer to front of card base with Stampin' Dimensionals.

Today's Hodgepodge Hardware project features the small flower brad in Styled Silver (#111325).  I love using brads to replace the "O" in stamped words - it looks so neat!  Just make sure your brad fits into the image.

The small brad is 3/8" in diameter and is just slightly larger than the "O" in "Go Green."  Fortunately there is enough space between the letters that nothing else is covered.

Help! We Need the Crafter's Tool Kit Back!!

I've been working on a lot of projects since this lovely product was retired last June and I'm really sad that it's no longer available to you.  The Crafter's Tool Kit had elastic loops that held the tools (see articles between April, 2009 and June 2009 for details and pictures - just search this site for "crafter's tool kit") plus pockets that held what's now in the Mat Pack (#105826).  There was also a front pouch that was the perfect size to hold the Cutter Kit (#106958).  The only other tool left is the Paper-Piercing Tool (#116631).  I miss the hammer, the long needles, the pliers with wire cutter and especially the Anywhere Punches (1/4" & 1/8") and Eyelet Setter.

I'd like you to help me bring this great tool kit back.  Take a look at the articles:
