Orange & Black – Traditional Hallowe’en Scheme
Orange & Black are traditional Hallowe’en colors in a Monochromatic Color Scheme. I was researching why Orange & Black (and sometimes Purple) are associated with Hallowe’en, but couldn’t find anything definitive. So… I’ll make a guess. Many of the customs around Hallowe’en are based on harvest festivals. Orange is definitely prominent in harvest colors, as is Black, to provide contrast. Purple can also be a harvest color, although I tend to call it a Potion Color. You may remember this from my Favorite Hallowe’en Colors article.
I tend to resist making Hallowe’en projects with just Orange and Black, however, I couldn’t withstand the look of the chandelier from the Season to Sparkle Stamp Set. You’ve seen it in the Beige & Black Classic Elegance articles. I decided to use the chandelier with a Black on Orange combination just for fun. The chandelier is a very large image and multiple colors would be tricky.
This Hallowe’en Monochromatic Color Scheme uses Basic Black from the Neutrals Color Group and Tangerine Tango from the Orange-Red Color Group. I like the brightness and depth of color of Tangerine Tango, which plays well against Basic Black.
I just had to use the Black Rhinestone Jewels on the chandelier. You can see the light reflection on the one at the top, but the others are basically invisible. They show as a solid black circle against the stamped rounded nodes in the chandelier design. You can see where they’re supposed to be in the Beige & Black Classic Elegance article.
A couple of tips: Use the Smoky Slate Classic Stampin’ Pad to stamp your envelope. It’s easier for addressing to show. Since the Vintage Crochet Trim is about 1/4” wide, roll Tear & Tape Adhesive strips to fit behind the trim. Otherwise, wrap it around, tie it in a knot or bow, and secure with Glue Dots.
This color scheme is good for some Fall projects besides Hallowe’en and for Team Colors. In my area, Orange & Black are the school colors for Santa Rosa High School and the team colors for the San Francisco Giants. My nephews in Maine also graduated from a high school with Orange and Black as the school colors. The colors inspire several card, page and gift ideas, don’t they?
